Hey etown crew, this spotlight is about an incredible new member, Abhishek (aka Abhi)! Abhi is a graduate from our first New You Challenge, and has a great mentality about CrossFit. He works extremely hard, and is always eager to correct/ improve his technique. I have never been asked so many times by an athlete to see if he was doing something properly, and he always shows improvement the next time he tries anything in our gym!!
What brought you to CrossFit e-town?
I had not tried anything physically challenging for a long time and wanted to try something to prove to myself that I could. It was a coincidence that I saw the advertisement on New You Challenge on Facebook, a day or two after I discussed this goal with my friend.
What was your first impression?
I was the last one to finish the WOD on the first day. The crew and coaches were so nice and sweet to cheer for me while I was struggling to finish it. I thought the whole crossFit thing would be too much for me and I would never be able to keep up with the rest of the crew. However I knew that with this kind of right people around, I would be able to do it.
What is your favorite CrossFit movement, and least favorite CrossFit movement?
My favorite would be back-squats and my least favorite is burpee-box-jumps.
What would you say is the biggest difference between the New You challenge versus normal CrossFit classes?
While New You introduced me to the different techniques, I am learning new stuff and building upon my skills in the normal classes. The large number of movements ( especially the Open WOD kind ) in WODs in the normal classes is quite intimidating. The normal classes are more productive than the New You ones. Then again, to prepare oneself for the normal classes, it is necessary to have something like NYC.
What’s the toughest part of CrossFit for you?
For a beginner like me, the toughest part is to keep pace with the other members of the class. Though it is a tough challenge, it encourages me to work harder and better.
What is your favorite memory at CrossFit e-town?
There are so many good memories. My favorite one would be completing a Terrible Tuesday WOD. Coaches Kevin and Carrie were so encouraging that they cheered for me till I finished it (I finished it 27 seconds later than the 25 min limit).
What is your biggest fitness goal for the near future?
Now that I have reduced my weight and learned some new skills, I want to improve on numbers -better time and more reps – and quality.
What kind of changes have you seen, both physically and mentally?
I have become more focused on routine. This sense of routine helps me with my research work at Northwestern as well. Having reduced weight by 6 kgs, I have started paying attention to diet and nutrition.
