Name(s): Patty and Sam

Age(s): Patty 59, Sam 58

Patty: Cardiology Nurse Practitioner

Sam: Marketing/Business Development

How long have you been at CrossFit e-town?:

“We took CrossFit 101 in February, 2016, so about 8 months.”

What do you enjoy doing outside of CrossFit, individually or together?

Sam: “We both like to ride bikes, hike, watch sports especially hockey and lacrosse and we like to read.  We spend time with our adult children—we have 1 daughter who is married and living in Rogers Park and a son living in Burlington, VT, and our youngest son in a senior at Beloit College. Patty dabbles in knitting and I enjoy brewing beer.”

When did you start CrossFitting? Who/what got you started?

Patty: “I signed us up in an effort to improve both of our fitness levels. I was pretty consistently walking year round, but Sam had not found a fitness routine that he could stick with.”

What is your least favorite WOD?

Patty: “Nancy” (5 Rounds for Time: 400 meter run, 15 overhead squats)

Sam: “Anything with burpees!”

What is your favorite/least favorite movement?

Patty: “My least favorite movement is the squat snatch. I keep asking why is it named a ‘snatch’ because it is not ‘a snatch to perform’!!!

Sam: “I agree with Patty, I do not like the snatch. My favorite movement is the Russian kettle bell swing.”

Patty: “I like back squats now that my mobility has improved and they are getting easier.”

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, job, sports, interests, etc.).

Patty: “I was on the first women’s basketball and volleyball team at my high school, thanks to Title Nine!  Prior to my sophomore year in high school, there were no girls’ sports teams. The most that I could participate in was cheerleading.  Sadly, I believe that my niece wore the same uniform as I about 15 years later.”

Sam: I played hockey, soccer, and lacrosse at the JV level during high school.  I did play club lacrosse at the University of Iowa which is where we met and began dating.”

What was your workout routine before CrossFit?

Sam: “Biking occasionally and Patty walked regularly.”

What did you think after your first CrossFit workout?

Patty: “We have never been so exhausted or sore.  That was from the free introductory class doing air squats, pushups, sit ups and ring rows.  Boy, we have come a long way!!”

What were your goals when joining CrossFit?  Have you achieved any of those goals?

Patty: My one goal was to back squat over 100 pounds and last week my PR one rep max was 110 lbs! Sam’s goal was to be able to do 10 sit ups.  He could not do one sit up at the intro class with Lyle.  Now he can do 40 in a row!”

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?

“We both have lost weight, we sleep better, and generally feel better.”

Do you have any other special memories/ achievements during your time here?

“We have interesting discussions about everything from beer to donuts with classmates and coaches.”

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining CrossFit e-town?

“Take is slowly, your classmates are not your competitors, and remember correct movement is better than lots of weight.”

Something you might not know about me is?

Sam: “Patty first tried weight lifting at her local YMCA in 1973 with Nautilus machines.  She really has not done any lifting since the early 1980s.  Bet that was before some of you were born!”

The thing(s) we love most about CrossFit etown are?

“The people!”
