Alvin earned his B.Sc. in Biology from Brown University and M.D. from Northwestern Univesity. He is a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer and has been doing CrossFit for 5 years primarily at River North CrossFft in downtown Chicago and for the past 1 ½ years at CrossfFt E-town after having moved to the suburbs.
Alvin was born in Kansas City and raised in St. Louis, Missouri where he was a 4 sport varsity athlete in soccer, basketball, cross country, and track. He was captain and all-city in soccer, though his first love was basketball. He has since competed in city-wide leagues in all of those sports as well as ultimate frisbee (which he initially thought was silly but now wishes he could play every weekend). He has run the Boston marathon, several half-marathons, and regularly competes in the Shamrock Shuffle and numerous 5ks. In the winter, as much as he can, he escapes Chicago and snowboards anywhere he can get to in the Rockies. Finally, in addition to coaching CrossFit, he has assistant and head coached varsity soccer and basketball teams that have competed for city and state championships in both Colorado and Illinois.
Alvin found CrossFit at the urging of his close college friend, athletic partner-in-crime and current owner of a CrossFit box downtown who said that despite all of the sports he had competed in that he would find nothing like CrossFit in terms of a life-changing—and lifelong—athletic experience. He found the hyperbole to be true and has never looked back, logging well over 1500 workouts in the past 5 years.
Alvin’s love of CrossFit is both as an athlete and a coach, and feels it is one of the rare athletic endeavors where it is crucial to be both so as a coach you can understand the journey your athletes are on in a visceral and brutally honest manner. His favorite CrossFit saying is “Strong people are harder to kill and more useful in general.” His favorite girl WOD is Nancy, and favorite hero WOD is Murph. He looks forward to helping people get in the box so they can tackle life outside with grit, confidence, and optimism—which is exactly what it does for him.
When Alvin is not at the box, you can find him in Skokie at his home office, at O’Hare flying off to work with his many clients in the field of healthcare education, or playing with his kids, 4 and 6, who both learned about CrossFit before they learned about the Cubs!
